Monetize a Flash Game: Important things to consider after finishing a game

Tagged Under : , , ,

There are many factors to consider when completing your flash game, which will be vital for success in attempting to monetize the game.

Name: When possible it is best to keep it short, easy to remember.

Description: The description should capture users attention, the ideal thing is to describe in few lines what the game is about. You should not do it very long because there are people who do not like reading large amounts of text. A good description is one that makes the player want to try the game.

Thumbnail: It is important to make a good Thumbnail that represent your flash game. It is necessary to consider that both the player and the sponsor will be the first thing that they will see of your game and it is very important that it attracts their attention. Think that the icon will be what will cause that they choose to play your game that will be competing with very many other games for the visual domain. This is the first interaction that your game has with the player, so the first impression is very important. The dimensions of the thumbnail will change depending on the site in question, this must be taken into account to generate the thumbnail in high resolution so as to enable it to adapt to different sizes without losing quality.

On the other hand there are developers who choose to put the name of the game in the thumbnail. I particularly like putting the name of the game only if the thumbnail size is medium or large, in case the thumbnail is too small I believe that to put the name is counterproductive because it takes space and can even be read.

There is a very interesting article that speaks more in depth of this subject, that I recommend to read: Thumbnail Design: A Picture Is Worth A Thousand Plays

Mute button: If the game has sound, it is very important to give the player the possibility to disable the sound, so do not forget to add a mute button.

Pause: It is better to give the player the possibility of pausing the game, so I recommend that the games have a pause button

Monetize a Flash Game: Important things to consider before starting your flash game

Tagged Under : , , , ,

There are a lot of important things to decide when you start a new flash game, some of them have to be resolved before starting the game. I wanted to make a guide on the important issues that must be taken into account when developing a game and show some interesting resources on the internet you can use for your games. I hope all this information can help you when you get to develop games.
Game Requirements: There are some points like the specs of the game that you have to consider before starting a new game. If not, it can result on the failure of the game:
  • Dimensions: One of the first decision you have to take is to define the dimensions of your game, you have to be careful when making that decision. Making it too small or too big can decisively influence the gameplay. On the other hand, you can not choose any resolution if you want to put ads in the game. For example the game must be larger than 300×300 to show ads from mochiads. Games 500×400 and larger will have  more opportunities to make money because more ads can be shown within your game. Another thing to keep in mind is that some portals, maybe future sponsors, will not allow sizes larger than 700×600, and some few portals don´t allow “width” larger than 550. So if your game is bigger than 550 width, I recommend that the game can scale when it change its size (Stage.scaleMode  = “showAll”).
    Emanuele Feronato writed about “The perfect size for a Flash game”. He has collected the sizes of 7,873 games and made some queries to obtain some interesting stats:
    1) 550×400 (18%)
    2) 640×480 (11%)
    3) 600×400 (6%)
    4) 800×600 (5%)
    5) 750×530 (2%)
  • FPS: This is another of the important points to consider. Generally I choose a frame rate of 30 fps since the animations tend to be smooth. I think a frame rate lower than 24 fps will make the animations look sharp, but be care as higher frame rates are more CPU consuming.
  • Size: The smaller size of the game the better as the game loads faster. Note that there are sponsors who does not accept sizes up to 4MG. I prefer to keep the game under 2 MG if I can.
  • Make it one file: Keep all the game in one file, a single .swf. It will be easier to distribute the game across the internet when you finished it. Think that there are portals that steal the game to other portals, making that your game receives more plays. If you have multiple files for your game, it will be more difficult for portals to steal your game, making the viral effect more difficult.
  • Time of development: It is important to know how much time you dedicate to the development of your game, so finally you can calculate the average dollar/hour you have earned.
    Doing that you could estimate how much money you could earn monthly, working fulltime on developing flash games.

Graphics: One of the main problems that always finds a developer are the graphics. Think that your game will have more chances of earning money with better graphics. If you’re not good at making art you have several options to solve this problem:

  • Find an illustrator and pay him for his work: There are advantages and disadvantages in doing this. If you don´t earn enough money from your game you will be loosing money as you assume all the risks. On the other hand all the money generated by the game will be for you, you do not have to share the earnings with anyone.
  • Find an illustrator and share the revenues generated by the game: This option is less risky than the previous one as you do not spend any money, but you have to share all future revenues generated by your game.
  • Create simple geometric vector graphics with flash: There are many successful games on the Internet with simple graphics. It may be a good solution for your game as it is very easy to make simple graphics using flash, but you have to make sure your game has a good gameplay. This option is not risky and you don not have to share any revenues generated by your game.
  • Create simple 3D graphics: If you have some little knowledge of 3D modeling tools this could be a good option. You can make the game look more professional with little effort. Using simple basic shapes, good textures and some light you can make the renders and have good graphics for your game.
  • Buy art for little money: There are some places where you can buy and sell your media files for little money. This can be a good solution to find graphics and some effects for your games. Flash Den is a good place where you can do that.
If you’ve opted for one of the first two options, here are some useful resources where you can look for artist for your game:
  • Flash Game Art: FlashGameArt is a place to sell and buy art for flash games. FlashGameArt has been created by the same people who created FlashGameLicense. The idea is that artists can show and sell their art and to help developers create their games. This helps to create better games for developers and monetize more efficiently these games.
  • Deviant Art: DeviantArt is an international online community for artists, a place for any artist to exhibit and discuss works. You can see a category called “Game Development Art”, where you can find several artists for your flash games.
  • GFX Artists: GFXArtists is another community site for digital artists where you can find an artist for your game. Their goal is to create an online environment where their visitors can communicate, learn and expose their work.
  • Concept Art: ConceptArt, a web community of artists who want to help each other learn about art, provide the best place to showcase work, and to meet other artists from around the world.
GamePlay: The gameplay is the heart of the game, make it original and fun. It would be good to make the first levels of the game easier to not frustrate the new players. If the players find the game difficult to play at the beginning they will stop play your game, it is good to increase the difficulty as you progress through the different levels.
Sounds: Sound and music is a very important part of the game, it creates an atmosphere very interesting. Maybe without sound or music it could be boring. Here are some interesting places where you can find sounds. Some of them are totally free:
  • SoundSnap: SoundSnap is a good place where you can find high quality Sound Effects and Loops for your game and it is totally free. You can download 5 FREE sounds a month and you can use it for commercial products.
  • Sound Xtras: soundsXtras provides absolutely Free royalty sounds library download for animation, games and multimedia project.
  • Absolute Sound Effects Archive: This place is one of the largest collection of free sounds on the internet.
  • Sound Rangers: SoundRangers has a collection of professional quality sound effects and music designed specifically for video games and interactive media.You can buy them for little money, about 2 dollars each sound.
  • 8bitRocket: 8bitRocket offers loops and sound effects for your game, you can use the 11khz versions for free but you must provide credit to 8bitrocket and a link back to his page in your work. On the other hand you can buy a 44khz stereo high quality format.
  • NewGrounds Audio Portal: Another good place to find sounds although it may be more difficult to find good sounds, and certainly have to give credit to the author.
  • Flash Kit SoundFX: Here you will find a list of shareware and freeware SoundFX for download.
Instructions: Make the instructions clear and easy to read. Try not to write too much text, put graphics where you can, think that people don´t want to read a lot of text before playing your game. Maybe some just read the instructions after playing the game, only if they liked the game.
Fonts: It is very important to choose a font according to the theme of the game, choosing a good font will cause the game to look more consistent. Here are some interesting places where you can find free fonts for your game:
  • Dafont: Archive of freely downloadable fonts. Browse by alphabetical listing, by style, by author or by popularity.
  • Urban Fonts: Free fonts and free dingbats. PC fonts, Mac fonts, truetype fonts.
  • Blue Vertigo: A lot of useful links to sites where you will find other things beside fonts.
  • Free Fonts TTF: A place where you can download free fonts.

And that´s ALL :) . I hope all these information can help. Fell free to submit some more useful resources.

The Mystic Way: Different ways to earn money through a flash game

Tagged Under : , , , , , , ,

In the last months I’ve been reading a lot of articles and information related to people who have monetized their own flash games. Although I have been working as a game developer for quite some time I started to be interested on flash games monetization when I came across Emanuele Feronato´s blog. He wrote several articles about this topic and made and experiment with different ways for monetizing his games. From these moment I started to seek for more information on that topic on the internet.
I have also read an interesting article on gamasutra titled: Where’s The Cash For Flash?. Among other things they explain that a single developer with a lot of hard work can earn about $400.000 dollars in a year by making flash games. I think that is really crazy, perhaps there is one in a million who can earn that money, but not the common people ;) . What I really think is that someone can earn enough money to live of developing flash games.
I have explained different ways of monetizing flash games, now is the time to put all these thing into practice and explore what happens. I am going to try to monetize my last flash game: The Mystic Way.
I will explain in detail each step of this process with the objective of learning from my successes and failures. I will try to make a new post for each one of these points:
  1. Important things to consider before starting a game.
  2. Important things to consider after finishing a game.
  3. Preparing the game for Ads (I will use MochiAds):
    * Sing Up MochiAds and MochiBot.
    * Put MochiAds into the game.
    * Put MochiBot into the game.
    * Put MochiAds Leaderboards into the game.
    * Site Lock the game.
    * Encrypt the game.
  4. Host the game in my own site with google adsense.
  5. Sing Up FlashGameLicense.com
  6. Upload the game to FlashGameLicense and wait for a sponsorship.
  7. Send emails to sponsors.
  8. Results on FlashGameLicense .
  9. Distribute the Game (With or without sponsor)
    * Kongregate
    * NewGrounds
    * MochiAds Game Distribution (Hi5)
    * FlashGameDistribution
    * MindJolt (Facebook, MySpace, Bebo, Hi5 and Orkut)
    * HeyZap
    * Submit the game to more portals
  10. Promote my Site & Game:
    * Digg
    * Stumbleon
    * Taringa
    * Dzone
    * Spurl
    * More…
  11. Results
So…. I will have a lot of work from now on :)
